Vitamin D: What it meant for me

So I was recently told I’m deficient in vit. D after taking a blood test with my GP. So what does that mean you ask? My first thought was “well I’ve never even so much as broke a bone, how bad could it be?” but when I started to read into symptoms associated with its deficiency it was like reading an account of my day-to-day life (minus the fact I should be wrapped in bubble wrap for fear of snapping a bone.)

So what does vitamin D do for your body?

Primarily, vitamin D aids calcium absorption and promotes bone growth.

Sources of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is lacking in many people’s diet. It’s main food source is fatty fish such as tuna, mackerel, and salmon. It’s also found in cheese, egg yolks and beef liver. Because it features so poorly in our diet, foods are now fortified with vitamin D, like some dairy products, orange juice, soy milk, and cereals.

Vitamin D is also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ but living in Ireland, exposure to sun is limited, to say the least, and because of that again, our milk bottle skin tends to have a reliance on the good aul factor 50 which hinders its absorption.

So I started googling (as you do, and which you probably shouldn’t) and of course the C word was mentioned, when is it not? But more importantly, to me anyway, the following symptoms were listed. Now for the record, I have no expertise in this and some of these symptoms are based on circumstantial evidence as opposed to cold hard science but, like I said above, it was like it was describing me to a tee. So here is what applied

  • Fatigue
  • High blood pressure (for me this is usually borderline, particularly my diastolic which was previously a lot lower in the past)
  • Restless sleep
  • Poor concentration
  • Headaches
  • Bladder problems

There’s even some, although limited, research to say it can be linked to depression. Which, to be honest, is what I put all the above symptoms down to in the 1st place so hopefully me being treated will help somewhat but only time will tell.

Then there’s a few more obvious ones (Although like I’ve said numerous times before, I am recovering from a shoulder injury *queue eye roll* -anyone that follows my blog will be fed up of seeing this mentioned 😂) so the association may be biased but it’s more along the lines of what you think in relation to vit. D

  • General muscle pain and weakness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Joint pain
  • Chronic pain

So I was prescribed 50,000IU vitamin D once a week for 6weeks which will be amended once this elevates my blood level.

Looking forward to seeing if there’s any bit of an improvement in the coming weeks. I’ll write an update down the line and let ye know. If anyone else has tried this I’d love to hear from you.
